My family and I travelled with Malaysian Airlines to Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
In KL we stayed at the Istana Hotel which is an excellent hotel right in the Golden triangle shopping area. I would highly recommend a room on the Club floor. To get around we used the Hop on hop off city tour bus which we found to be the most inexpensive way to see KL as we could get off at all the major sights over the whole day. We bought lots of bargains shopping in the Golden Triangle (department stores) and Petaling Street night markets. Jalan Alor ‘eat street’ is a must do! KL is very clean and very modern, comparable to Singapore. Accommodation is cheap for a very high standard.
In Penang we stayed at the Golden Sands Hotel. This would have to be the best located hotel in Batu Ferringhi area (beach area of Penang). Great for families and couples. Right next to the Shangri-la Resort and they share a 9 hole golf course.
We enjoyed some more great shopping at the department store in Georgetown and market shopping at the night markets at Batu Ferringhi. Be sure to have a meal at ‘Long Beach’ at these markets! We did an island tour which included a visit to a butterfly farm, snake farm, plus a cable car ride up Penang Hill. I really enjoyed Penang and think it is a great destination especially for first timers to Asia. It is a very relaxed Asian experience and excellent for families.
