We were transferred by Royal Caribbean to Tianjin wharf which is approximately 2.5 hours away from Beijing Airport to board the magnificent Ovation of the Seas for her naming ceremony! Arrival at the wharf was very exciting with lots of fan fair and paparazzi.
There were 100 Australia travel agents and 3000 Chinese media onboard for this 3 day Naming Ceremony celebration.
The Ovation of the Seas is a truly amazing cruise ship. She is HUGE and there are so many activities onboard!
Dining: There is no main dining room on the Ovations Seas, but instead 4 smaller ones included in complimentary dining. They all have beautiful décor and nice menus. American Icon Grill, Silk, Chic and The Grande Restaurant.
You can choose either Dynamic Dining which is no set time, no set restaurant, no assigned seats and you make your reservations either 90 days prior or once on board via the ipads located throughout the ship.
The other option is to choose Dynamic Classic Dining. For guests who enjoy a more traditional dining experience, the Dynamic Dining Classic option allows guests to choose an early seating, be served by the same waiter and assistant waiter, and sit with the same tablemates each night. Diners will rotate through the four complimentary restaurants and will find their table in the same location in each restaurant, nightly.
Other complimentary dining options:
• Windjammer Buffet
• Solarium Bistro
• Pizza place open until 3am
• 2 Cafés on Promenade deck (one is complimentary and one is charged for premium coffees)
• Café @ 270- also offered sandwiches/wraps etc for a lighter breakfast and lunch
• Hot Dog Van
There are a number of amazing Speciality Dining Restaurants with an additional charge. You must pre-book for Speciality dining prior to your cruise as these restaurants book out.
• Jamie Olivers Italian
• Chops Grill
• Izumis (Japanese)
• Michael’s Pub
• Kung Fu Pandas Noodle Bar- casual eats near pool
We heard great reviews on all. We experienced Izumis ourselves and it was delicious. The menu has a mixture of cooked and raw Japanese.
Bionic Bar This is so much fun and so clever. You sit at a table with an ipad and order your cocktail from those listed or create your own. Then the clever little robot starts making and shaking your cocktail. There is an electronic board that shows how many minutes until your cocktail is ready. Prices are $12 USD + taxes but they use top shelf spirits so not a bad price. (ps. The Cosmo’s are delicious!)
They had a number of cabin categories open for us to view. You can see pictures of the cabin categories we saw in itravel The Junctions facebook album- Ovation of the Seas. All cabins were very tastefully decorated, the Suites are beautiful and the Loft suites are jaw droppingly amazing!
There are dress and height/weight/age requirements for many activities. Please check this prior to booking to avoid disappointment. They are quite strict on this.
Bumpers Cars – children over 5, need closed shoes
Rock Climbing Wall- children over 6
Roller skating- children over 6
FlowRider®, must be at least 52″/132 cm tall to use the bodyboard and 58″/147 cm tall to use the flowboard
ifly® You must pre-book your flight. Please be aware there is a weight limit (height based), Under 6 foot maximum weight 104kg, over 6 foot maximum weight 113kg. Check in is 5-10 minutes prior to your flight time, and the whole process from check-in, safety video, dressing in flying gear and ‘flying’ is about 1 hour in total. Your flight is only 1 minute but it feels like longer! You cannot take phones or cameras with you into the waiting area so you may want to stagger flight times with family or friends if you want to have photographs or video of your flight. It is SOOO much fun!
The North Star operates weather permitting. It offers and amazing view of the ship and horizon from the glass dome. It is air conditioned and a smooth ride. It would be worthwhile doing this day and night time.
